Proverbs 2:9-10
“You will understand the fear of God...You will find the knowledge of God...When wisdom enters your heart...When it's taste is pleasant to your soul.”
In other words, we will never see or understand the things that are from God until the desire of our heart is changed by what is in it...and the appetite of our soul by what we feed it. Truth tastes like a nasty and bitter medicine to a fool...but to the wise it is like sweet honey on a homemade buttered biscuit!
We know that spiritual change comes only through Christ' redemptive work on the cross. However, the continued work of change takes place through our hearts incessantly being renewed.
Romans 12:2 “Don’t be conformed to this world; but be transformed by the renewing of your mind that you may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God.”
In this very verse we see the progression of wisdom from good and acceptable to perfect. The constant cleansing of the mind is something that we must apply. It is accomplished through our conscious decision to go down a different path, making a choice to go against the flow, and overcome the lies of the enemy using the most powerful force on earth; God’s Word.
Ephesians 5:26-27 “Christ loved us, and gave himself for us...that he might change and cleanse us with the washing of the water by the word...”
Notice that the cleansing and change come through the application of truth. The only way to renew our mind is through washing the way we think with the cleansing power of God's way of thinking. We have heard the term “brainwashing”. The fact of the matter is that all of us need to change the way we think about certain things in our lives and in the world around us.
However, the washing is not just to get the bad things out, but rather, to make room for new things...so that wise things might enter in and find a place to abide. Most of the time, we lack understanding, because we haven’t made room for it in our mind. The closet of our mind is just too cluttered with useless and harmful junk.
