Bright Eyes: By LaVaughn Landry

Proverbs 15:30
The light of the eyes makes the heart full of joy …

The writer here says that joy is found in the light of the eyes.  Have you ever seen someone’s eyes that literally radiate with light when they smile?  Some folks’ eyes are just always full and bright!  Simply because they were nurtured to be happy and content people.  We get the greatest joy not in what we see, but how we see things.  This light of the eyes is simply having a good perception of life.   Instead of seeing the broken tree…we see the beautiful bird singing her song from it. Instead of only focusing on what is wrong with the world all the time…we need to spend more time looking at what is right with it!

Joy is something after which the whole world vehemently seeks.  Sadly, enough though, too often they look for it in the wrong places.  Therefore, we come up too many times empty.  However, in this particular verse, Solomon gives us a key to having joy in life…and even more importantly…how to keep it.

Life exposes all of us to both the good and the bad.  However, our perception is based on our reaction to the situation, and our decision concerning how we will live the future based on each individual circumstance.  People can lie about us, harshly judge us when we fall, cut us off in traffic, snub us, and do many hurtful things to us.  However, ultimately we chose how we react in these situations.  It is up to us whether we allow these things to darken our eyes…and put out our light!

Finally, notice how the writer speaks about how light has a positive effect on the heart.  Light certainly brings joy into the heart.  But darkness will break it!  Don’t let anything contaminate your joy.  Don’t let people steal your hopeful, optimistic, and joyous outlook on life.  After all, it is your life!  Ignorance can at times be such bliss!  So play ignorant; for this kind of ignorance is wisdom.  It is wisdom to ignore that which dims the light of the eyes and steals its rose colored glasses through which it sees life!
